Members also carry on doing their other tasks, such as far

“Apart from being able to increase their incomes, what is noticeable is that the women finally have a say in their family decisions now,” says Zhang.

“Earlier, they used to feel that they needed to ask their husbands even if they just w

anted to buy a 10-yuan sweater. But now, they feel free to make their own choices.”

In 2016, the China Women’s Federation designated Xihe county as the model base for alle

viating poverty and began to offer financial support to the likes of Qiqiao Workshop.

One of the beneficiaries was Lyu Xiaohong, the founder of the Baoji Embroidery Culture Company.

The federation encourages poor households to become shareholders by allocating each

of them an equity of 5,000 yuan. At the same time, Lyu’s company signed an agreement with the hou

seholds, promising a dividend of not less than 1,000 yuan by the end of each year. Now, 36 poor households in the v

illage, more than half of such households there, have decided to join the company.

The Hong Kong-based jewelry company invested in a factory in Nansha 15 years ago.

“Because of the differences in legal and company structures between Hong K

Companies from Hong Kong and Macao have increased their investment in Nansha in recent years, with the number of bu

Education proves value of cooperationversity collaborations l

As the United States and China continued trade talks this week, companies and industries in both countries, including the education sector, will be hoping for a sign

ificant breakthrough that can lift Sino-US relations from the current morass and end the tit-for-tat trade war that

has seriously affected exchanges of goods, technology and people between our nations.

For Sino-US joint-venture universities, such as Duke Kunshan University, in China’s eastern p

rovince of Jiangsu, the ramifications of a further ramp-up in tensions would be felt acutely.

Fortunately, the impact of the trade dispute on these educational joint ve

ntures has been minimal. But naturally there has been uncertainty surrounding the

issuance of work and student visas (although the Chinese government has been quick to make assurances), and p

arents have raised questions about the sustainability of such projects should relations sour further.

More than ever before, it is important to remember that joint-venture educational p

rojects highlight the importance and value of true mutually beneficial co

operation. Today, there is hardly a single major global problem for which the long-term solution does not depend on

close collaboration between the US and China, respectively the largest and second-largest economies in the world.

As the aid delivery deadline approaches, the spotlight

Maduro staged a rival concert a few hundred meters away on the Venezuelan side of the bridge in Tachira.

The beleaguered President, who is facing growing calls to step down, denies that a huma

nitarian crisis exists in his country and suggests that aid efforts are part of a US plot to orchestrate a coup.

CNN’s Jorge Luis Perez Valery reported from Caracas and Claudia Dominguez from Atlanta, w

hile Laura Smith-Spark wrote from London. CNN’s Diana Castrillon, Stefano Pozzebon, Di

ane Ruggiero, Isa Soares and Eliza Mackintosh contributed to this report.Singer R. Kelly is scheduled to ap

pear in court Saturday for a bail hearing after his arrest on charges of sexual abuse spanning from 1998 to 2010.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx announced Friday that the R&B musician, whose full name is Robert Kelly, wa

s indicted on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse — a class two felony — involving four alleged victims.

The indictment accuses Kelly of sexual acts with three children older than 13 but younger than 17. There is no age ran

ge listed for one of the alleged victims. The charges say Kelly used force or the threat of force.

His attorney described his client as an innocent man, saying Foxx

  succumbed to public pressure.

”I think all the women are lying,” attorney Steve Greenberg said. “Mr. Kelly is strong, he’s got a lot

of support and he’s going to be vindicated on all these charges — one by one if it has to be.”

Kelly turned himself in Friday night, just hours after Chicago police issued a warrant for his arrest. He arrived in a large,

black van wearing a hoodie under an electric blue puffer jacket. He waded through a sea of reporters asking que

stions like “What do you have to say to the fans?” and “What do you have to say to the black women of Chicago?”

Kelly did not respond. Once he entered the building, he was handcuffed and led away by police. His arraignment is set for March 8.

New evidence involves a tape and an underage girl

Homeland Security Investigations is involved in an investigation of Kelly, a US Im

migration and Customs Enforcement official said. The official did not provide any details.

A grand jury was convened in Cook County this month in connection with new allegations against Kelly, two sources close to the case told CNN.

Greenberg told CNN this month that he had not been notified of a grand jury. Days before, attorney Michael Avenatti announc

ed he had given the State’s Attorney’s Office a videotape that he said showed Kelly having sex with an underage girl.

rump picks US ambassador to Canada for UN ambassador

President Donald Trump said Friday he intends to nominate the current Ame

rican ambassador to Canada to be the new US ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump tweeted on Friday evening that he plans to nominate Kelly Knight Craft for the position, following former Ambassador Nikki Haley‘s resignation last year.

”I am pleased to announce that Kelly Knight Craft, our current Ambassador to Canada, is be

ing nominated to be United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

He followed up in a second tweet, saying, “Kelly has done an outst

anding job representing our Nation and I have no doubt that, under her leadership, our Cou

ntry will be represented at the highest level. Congratulations to Kelly and her entire family!”

Trump’s announcement comes a week after his first pick to replace Haley, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, withdrew her candidacy.

On Thursday, the pontiff opened the summit by urging he b

nd other church leaders to commit to taking concrete actions.

”The holy people of God are looking at us and expect from us not simple condemnat

ions,” Francis said, “but concrete and effective measures to put in place. We need to be concrete.”

The Pope then said he had made a list of 21 “reflection points” that were handed out to the assembly of church leaders, wh

ich included preparing a “practical handbook” of guidelines for handling abuse cases when accusations emerge.

Also included are instructions to inform civil authorities and church officials whenever an accusation is made, esta

blishing provisions to include non-clergy experts in investigations, as well as formulating “mandatory codes of c

onduct” for all church clergy, personnel and volunteers “to outline appropriate boundaries in personal relationships.”

More controversially, the Pope proposed that dioceses and Catholic organizations around the world not publish

lists of clergy accused of abuse before a preliminary investigation and “definitive” condemnation have occurred.

”The principle of natural and canon law of presumption of innocence must be also be saf

eguarded until the guilt of the accused is proven,” the Pope said in the “reflection points.”

The event will feature performances from more than

artists, according to the concert’s website. These include huge names in Latin America, like Colombian musical legends Carl

os Vives, Juanes and reggaetón singer Maluma — all three of whom have collaborated with pop-star Shakira in the past.

Swedish DJ Alesso is also on the lineup, alongside Mexican rock band Mana, who

have won seven Latin Grammys and four Grammys, and Spanish singer and songwriter Alejandro Sanz.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who invoked a constitutional provision last month to declare himself acting pres

ident, has been working with a raft of global partners, including the United States, to bring aid into the co

untry. Maduro has repeatedly refused assistance, leaving aid languishing on the border despite growing shortages.

The Venezuelan government has used containers to barricade the Tienditas Bridge and prevent aid from entering.

Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, told CNN en Espanol Thursday that he was asked to do the concert by Guaido.

Samsung’s Galaxy S10 lineup: Foldable phones, 5G and

A 5G device. A foldable phone that morphs into a tablet. A smartphone that can charge another smartphone when sandwiched together.

Samsung is making bold moves with its new lineup of Galaxy S10 smartph

ones, which were announced Wednesday at its “Unpacked” press event in San Francisco.

Following a year of slower sales growth — due largely to the S

9 models not being different enough from its successful Galaxy S8 products — the co

mpany hopes a handful of innovative features will inspire consumers to trade in existing devices for newer models.

  The Galaxy Fold

Samsung kicked off its event with the debut of the Galaxy Fold, a 4.6 inch-smartphone that

can open up into a 7.3-inch tablet. Along with Samsung’s long teased Infinity Flex display, it has a hinge sy

stem that can’t be seen from the outside. The luxury device, which will cost $1,980, hits stores on April 26.

”We are creating a new dimension for your phone and your life,” a Samsung spokesper

son said during the event. “It doesn’t even define a new category; it defies a new category.”
